What is Fire Theology?

Pictured above is a couple of the local fire departments doing extrication training.

I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. – Matthew 3:11

My current chosen line of work is special. Special in that everything we do can relate in some way to Theology that differs from normal life. Sure, we can talk about being a Good Samaritan to a coworker in a cushy office building. There’s nothing wrong about that. But when a car gets T-Boned at an intersection and you have to help comfort a kid with a broken femur whose sister is dying from internal bleeding, the story of the Good Samaritan gets put in a new light. It becomes more real. My goal is to take real world stories from real calls myself and others run and try to reframe biblical principles and concepts through them.

This is a picture of me during training. This specific scenario was a simulated car fire.

So back to my initial question. What is Fire Theology? By my definition, Fire Theology is looking at the every day of a firefighter and viewing theology through his eyes. Which, really and truly, it should be called “Firefighter Theology.” However, I think that fire by itself has very important theological aspects that will be looked at later on.

I can’t promise that everything I write will be happy, but it will be real. The real world can be a sad and scary place. However, if you look carefully, you will find love and beauty in every situation. I’ll do my best to tell each story carefully and accurately, while also pointing out the love and beauty.
